Mexico Permanent Virtual Exhibition and Business Directory
Home to the Aztecs and the Mayans, Mexico came under Spanish rule in the 16th century before gaining independence in 1848. From the desert landscapes of Baja California, along the Pacific, to the lush Mayan Riviera, along the Caribbean, it is one of the world’s most magnificent countries.
Mexico’s free market economy is in the trillion dollar class and comprises modern industry, agriculture and tourism, much of which has come under private sector control. The country’s agricultural output accounts for a significant portion of GDP, particularly beans, beef, coffee, corn, cotton, dairy products, fruit, poultry, rice, soybeans, tomatoes, wheat and wood products.
Mexican companies contribute to GDP in a number of industries, including apparel and footwear, chemicals, consumer durables, food and beverage, iron and steel, mining, motor vehicles, petroleum, textiles and tobacco. Mexico, with proved oil reserves of 12.42 bbl, exports 1.225 million bbl/day.
Within the past few decades, the Mexican government has expanded competition in airports, electricity generation, natural gas distribution, railroads, seaports and telecommunications. Since the implementation of NAFTA in 1994, the Mexican share of US imports has grown from 7% to 12%, while its share of Canadian imports has grown from 2.5% to 5%. More than 90% of Mexican trade is under free trade agreements with more than 50 countries.
